Roedd ‘na dros 700 o bobl wedi heidio o bob cornel o Gymru i’r Undeb yn Aberystwyth ddydd Sadwrn ar gyfer Gwobrau’r Selar. Llongyfarchiadau i’r tim sy’n trefnu, mae nhw wedi llwyddo i greu gwyl-ganol-gaeaf sy’n denu cynulleidfa i gystadlu efo Maes B. Dyma rhai o f’uchafbwyntiau i.

Over 700 people packed the Student’s union in Aberystwyth on Saturday to enjoy the Selar Magazine’s annual awards ceremony. Congratulations to the organising team for making Gwobrau’r Selar one of the most important dates in the Welsh Music Scene calendar. Here are some of my highlights.

Ysgol Sul

Y peth cyntaf wnes i fore dydd Sul, ar ol brecwasd seimllyd- obvs, oedd lawr-lwytho sengl Aberystwyth yn y Glaw gan Ysgol Sul. Mi wnaethon nhw lwyddo i greu argraff fawr ar y gynulleidfa nos Sadwrn, ac ar y pleidleiswyr, yn amlwg. Dyma Artist Newydd Gorau Cymru, yn ol darllenwyr y Selar.

The first thing I did on Sunday morning was download Ysgol Sul’s Aberystwyth yn y Glaw (Aber in the rain). An appropriate song for that dreary hungover Sunday. They managed to make quite an impression on the crowd on Saturday night, and on the voters evidently. Here is the winner of the Best New Artist award.

Y Reu

Nid dyma’r tro cyntaf i mi son am faint ‘dw i’n mwynhau cerddoriaeth Y Reu, ond man a man i fi ailadrodd fy hun yn y cyd-destyn yma. Roedd o’n siom peidio gweld eu henw ar y rhestr fer, ond mae’n debyg bod siomi rhywun yn anochel pan mai dim ond tri enw sydd ar y rhestr fer ym mhob cateogori. Byddai’n braf gweld mwy o enwau ar y rhestr fer y flwyddyn nesa, fel bod mwy o amyrwiaeth o fandiau’n cael  cydnabyddiaeth am y gwaith mae’n nhw’n ei wneud drwy’r flwyddyn. Ta waeth, roedd y perfformiad ar y noson yn unioni’r cam.

This isn’t my first ode to Y Reu, however I may as well repeat myself in this context. I was disappointed that they didn’t appear on the short list for the awards, however it is inevitable that someone will be disappointed when only three names appear on the short list for each category. Next year, I would love to see more names on the short list so that more artists get recognition for their work throughout the year. 

Y Ffug

Mi oeddwn i’n siomedig na chafodd Y Ffug unrhyw wobr, nos Sadwrn. Ond ‘dw i’n siwr fysa nhw ddim balchach beth bynnag. Pwy sydd isio bod yn boblogaidd? Na finna chwaith. Gewch chi’r wobr gan Juxtapozed am y band mwya cwl. Ac am solo gitar gora’r noson hefyd.

I was disappointed that Y Ffug didn’t win any of the awards on Saturday. However I’m not sure whether they would really appreciate public admiration anyway… too populist, maybe? I agree. Juxtapozed awards you the coolest band award. Oh, and the award for the virtuoso guitar performance of the night. It has absolutely no currency, at all, but it’s all yours.

Yws Gwynedd a Sŵnami

Peidiwch a phoeni, it’s the thought that counts. Mae’ch brwdfrydedd i’w glodfori, ond yn anffodus, dyma rhywun yn colli peint dros rhywbeth hanfodol drydanol a chwythu’r lle i gyd. Cyn hynny, roedd set Swnami yn mynd lawr yn dda iawn a phawb yn mwynhau enillwyr Record Fer y Flwyddyn.

Gan symyd ymlaen, Yws Gwynedd aeth a hi efo’r gwobrau- mi gath o dri- a’r tri mawr hefyd. Y Record Hir, neu Albym, orau, Yr Artist Unigol Gorau a’r Gan Orau am Neb ar ol. Roedd hi’n siom na chafodd o’i gyfle mawr ar y llwyfan, ond dyna i chi reswm da i sicrhau eich bod chi yn ei gig nesa fo.

It’s the thought that counts, of course, and it was a noble thought. Yws Gwynedd came on to close Sŵnami’s set, however electricity and beer do not make good bedfellows. Before that, Sŵnami were a triumph and the crowd were absolutely loving the winners of the best E.P. award.

However, the big winner on the night was Yws Gwynedd. The former Frizbee frontman won three awards, Best Album, Best individual artist and Best Song for Neb ar ol. It was a great shame that he didn’t have the chance to play on Saturday night, but I’m sure three awards  made up for it.

Carcharorion

Cyn i mi ddechrau, mae’n rhaid i mi ddweud nad ydw i’n gallu bod yn ddi-duedd gyda Carcharorion. Wedi dweud hynny, ‘dw i’n ffyddiog bod pawb oedd yno’n cytuno gyda’r ffaith eu bod nhw’n wych nos Sadwrn. Mae hefyd yn briodol iawn, ar y diwrnod a fu Dr Meredydd Evans, rhywun mae arnom ni ddyled mawr iddo yng Nghymru, eu bod nhw wedi chwarae eu fersiwn nhw o Beth yw’r Haf i Mi?

Before I start, it’s important that I declare my interest in one half of Carcharorion. Having said that, I’m sure everyone else will agree that they were great on Saturday night. It was also very apt that they played their version of Beth yw’r Haf i Mi, on the very day that Dr Meredydd Evans died. We owe him a great debt of gratitude for his lifetime’s work to Wales, the Welsh language and, particularly it’s music.

Candelas

Fel y byddech chi’n ei ddisgwyl daeth Candelas a’r noson i ben gyda’i steil arferol. Roedd hi’n gret clywed eu deunydd newydd oddi ar y record ddiweddara, Bodoli’n Ddistaw. Y nhw oedd enillwyr Band y Flwyddyn a Gwaith Celf y Flwyddyn. Cydnabyddiaeth mae nhw’n ei haeddu oherwydd eu bod nhw wedi bod mor weithgar ar hyd y flwyddyn.

As you would expect, Candelas brought the house down as headliners with a trademark polished rock set. Their hard work throughout the year was recognised with a Band of the Year award and Best Artwork award. Congratulations boys.
